Celebrating Children’s Day, Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Friday inaugurated the ‘Children of the State Sports and Cultural Meet-2025’ at the Ridge, Shimla, with a vibrant celebration of talent and inclusion.
The four-day event, jointly organised by the Police Department and the Social Justice and Empowerment Department, will continue till 16 November.

Around 600 children from 29 Bal-Balika Sukh Aashraya ashrams across the State are participating.
Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister said that Children’s Day is dedicated to India’s first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, whose vision of affection, equality, and opportunity continues to guide child welfare initiatives. He said the festival reflects the state government’s resolve to uphold Nehru’s ideals and ensure a brighter future for every child.
Highlighting the Mukhyamantri Sukhashraya Yojana, the Chief Minister said Himachal Pradesh is the first state in the country to enact a law for the welfare of orphans, destitute children, and women.
Acting as a guardian, the state government has adopted 6,000 orphans and abandoned children as ‘Children of the State,’ ensuring complete care, education, and support until the age of 27. He announced that these children will be admitted to leading schools in every district, with the state government bearing the entire cost of their education. Reaffirming the commitment to girls’ empowerment, he said, “Beti Padhao is not just a slogan, it is my personal mission.”
He said that sports cultivate humility, courage, and essential life skills, and praised the resilience shown by the participating children. He commended the Police Department and the Social Justice and Empowerment Department for organising an inspirational and meaningful event.
On the occasion, the Chief Minister distributed laptops and school bags to the children.
Social Justice & Empowerment Minister Dr. (Col.) Dhani Ram Shandil said that the government is making sustained efforts to build confidence and leadership among children living in institutional care through sports, art, and cultural activities.
He also shared details of various welfare schemes being implemented by the department.
Director General of Police Ashok Tiwari welcomed the Chief Minister and outlined the programme, informing that the Police Department is undertaking several initiatives for the holistic development of children.
